Ceramics are a well-established choice in most showrooms. End customers are charmed by the wide variety of colors and patterns, as well as its heat resistance. However, the disadvantages of ceramics often remain underexposed to the general public and are certainly worth highlighting again in communication with (interior) architects and project developers. Just like how Diresco’s composite turns all these drawbacks into strengths.
1. Ceramics are hard, but also brittle
One of the main disadvantages of ceramics? Chipping and susceptibility to breakage. Due to its hardness, ceramics appear sturdy, but the surface remains brittle. A strong impact or rough contact can cause chipping more easily than with other finishing materials.
This is already a concern during the processing of slabs into countertops, but it remains a major point of attention throughout the product’s lifespan. In other words, extreme caution is required during transport, processing, installation, and even daily use.
2. Are ceramics a sustainable investment?
The fragility of ceramics can deter (re)builders or potential buyers of project homes who want to enjoy a kitchen countertop in perfect condition for as long as possible.
Is daily intensive use or heavy load—such as in kitchens or commercial interiors—the norm? Then it’s definitely worth critically assessing whether ceramics are the right long-term investment.
3. Beware of the ceramics and poli combination
A Poli finish gives the surface a glossy, polished look, making it a popular choice in kitchens and bathrooms. To achieve this look with ceramics, the surface is finished with a very thin but highly scratch-sensitive glass layer. An important consideration, especially in a heavily used kitchen environment.

What does Diresco’s composite offer instead?
Composite has evolved significantly over the past decades and even years, both in aesthetics and in ease of use and overall quality. At Diresco, our in-house R&D lab works daily to improve even further. What can you and your customers already count on today?
1. A touch that warms the heart
Like ceramics, composite is known for its intrinsic hardness, but put on a blindfold and you’ll immediately tell the difference. While ceramics feel cold to the touch, Diresco’s composite is characterized by its warm, soft touch. Much more than a subtle difference—something your customers will undoubtedly love.
2. An ever-growing collection thanks to in-house innovation
Our R&D team not only focuses on product optimization but also on testing and implementing new designs.
Did you know we’ve launched an entirely new production line based on a technical innovation developed in-house? This allows us to print any (natural stone) design at the highest quality on our slabs. The first designs—from the Taj Mahal to Carrara to Travertino Romano—are already available to order, with more to come.
3. A responsible and attractive price tag
Proven durability, long-term top quality, a wide range of design options, and great ease of use all come together in a highly attractive price point compared to other popular finishing materials. A cost that your customers will see directly translated into:
- Minimal replacement costs and an above-average total cost of ownership (for project developers)
- A strong reputation boost and an extra, active source of inspiration (for (interior) architects and fellow showroom owners)
- A material that retains all its charm over the years (for the end customer)
Moreover, every composite slab is produced right here in Belgium. No costly production and transport from faraway or exotic locations, but short and cost-efficient supply lines within national borders.
